Stretching from sea to sea, Costa Rica is a country of sandy beaches fringed by palms, grassy savannahs, warm inland valleys, temperate plateaus, smoking volcanoes, frosty peaks, forested slopes and steamy jungles. A sequence of volcanic mountains run down the middle of the country: in the centre of these mountains is a high-altitude fertile plain, with coastal lowlands on either side. The Caribbean coast is home to mangroves, swamps and sandy beaches, while the Pacific coast is much more rugged and rocky.

Best spots for water sports
Pavones on the Pacific Coast is a top spot for surfing, while snorkelling and diving opportunities abound at the Reserva Biologica Isla del Caño. Divers should head to Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean to explore coral, but if wreck diving is more your thing, head to Puerto Viejo. River kayaking takes place on the Bebedero River , or along the Sarapiquí.
Best spots for hiking & trekking
Barra Honda National Park is popular for its dozens of caverns, some of which plunge to depths of more than 600 feet. Another favourite spot is Rincón de la Vieja, a diverse national park with an impressive volcano, fumaroles, sulfuric ponds, geysers, hot springs and a rich flora and fauna.
