One of the largest countries in Europe , France ’s landscapes range from coastal plains and mountains to beech, oak and pine forests. The French Alps include Mont Blanc , which at 4800m is Europe 's highest peak, while the spectacular Massif Central mountain range covers one-sixth of the country. Coastline stretches from chalk cliffs to shady inlets, and includes the pebbly beaches of the south eastern Mediterranean and the sandy beaches of Languedoc and Roussillon .

With over 3000km of coastline, France is nirvana for water sports enthusiasts. All types of water sports are available, although the warm climate of the Mediterranean provides obvious advantages, with swimming in the sea possible practically all year round. France ’s 8500km of canals and rivers are ideal for boating, while the French Alps offer excellent skiing with some of the world’s best-known resorts. If hiking is more to your taste, there are thousands of miles of carefully marked trails in France complemented by an extensive network of mountain refuges. There is an extensive network of cycling paths along the Atlantic coast, all the way down to the Spanish border.

Diving and snorkelling are popular in Porquerolles and Corsica , while the English Channel and Atlantic waters are popular with sailing enthusiasts. Biarritz is renowned for good surfing, and the Côte d’Azur for sailing.

The Alps and the Pyrenees offer unbridled opportunities.
Best spots for skiing & snowboarding
Val d’Isere is located high in the French Alps, the town itself at 1,850m, with slopes up to 3,455m.
