Dominated by rivers and mountains, Laos ’s largest river is the Mekong . Running the entire length of the country, it provides fertile flood plains for agriculture and is Laos ' main transportation artery. The rugged Annamite Chain covers half the length of the country, while the highest mountain is Phu Bia in northern Laos , which stands at 2819m. Plains and plateaus are also found in the country.

The hilly nature of Laos makes it greatt trekking territory, and mountain-biking is a good way to enjoy the terrain. For the really adventurous, travelling around the whole country by bike is a wonderful way to discover Laos, thanks to the stunning mountain scenery dissected by beautiful rivers, magnificent stands of forest, and rural villages along roads with almost no traffic. White water rafting can be done on many of the rivers which flow through the rugged terrain.
