The second-smallest independent state in the world, Monaco is located on the Mediterranean coast and is surrounded on three sides by France . Consisting of a narrow coastal strip along the foothills of the Alps , its highest point is Le Rocher which stands at 140m. Almost entirely urbanised, Monaco is divided into four sections: Monaco-Ville, the old city on a rocky promontory extending into the Mediterranean, La Condamine, the section along the port, Monte Carlo, the principal residential and resort area with the casino, and Fontvieille, a newly constructed area reclaimed from the sea.

Water-skiing, parasailing and windsurfing are all catered for, and swimming in the sea is a popular local pastime. Best spots for water sports

The main public beach is the Larvotto Beach , but there is also a choice of several swimming pools: the Rainier III Swimming Pool, the Prince Albert Swimming Pool in the Louis II Stadium in Fontvieille, or the swimming pools in the grand hotels of the Principality. The Diving Club of Cap d'Ail organises diving sessions, and the Monaco Yacht Club is the spot to head for sailing. Jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing kiting, and wind surfing are all available at the Monte Carlo Beach Club from April to October.
