Diverse and quietly rolling, the north of Poland is fairly well forested and covered by over 9300 post-glacial lakes. Poland ’s longest river the Vistula waters the flat inner belt, while the terrain rises in the south finishing in the west at the Sudeten Mountains . To the east are the Carpathian Mountains , which run along the southern frontier, and are home to Poland ’s highest peak: Mt Rysy which stands at 2499m. Poland 's national parks are sprinkled consistently throughout the country, with a concentration in the mountainous regions of the south-east. Poland ’s Baltic coast stretches for some 528km, with long sandy beaches.

ADVENTURE SPORTS IN POLAND

Adventure sports enthusiasts are well catered for in Poland , with its Baltic coastal beaches to the north and the rocky crags of the Tatras to the south. The wonderful network of great Mazurian Lakes is a must for water sports fans, while the green wilds of the Bieszczady Mountains provide for first-rate hiking trips. In forested areas, hikers will frequently come across shelters, portable kitchens, and places especially designated for camping and campfires. Poland ’s national parks and nature reserves also offer a variety of hiking trails through different types of landscapes ranging from dunes, beaches, rivers and lakes to deep forests and high mountains. If mountain biking is your thing, different types of mountain routes are available throughout the country, and special cycling lanes are provided around larger cities.

Best spots for water sports

The Mazurian Lake District contains almost 3000 lakes, and is a popular spot for swimming. For sailing, try the Augustow, Ilawa and Mazurian lakes. Canoeists usually head to the Brodnica or Mysliborz lakelands, or the rivers Brda, Czarna Hancza and Obra where canoeing trips that last up to 12 days can be embarked on.

Best spots for hang gliding

Hang gliding is popular in the Beskid, Bieszczady and Sudety mountains.

Best spots for mountain biking

Mountain biking is popular in the Bieszczady and Karkonosze mountains.

Best spots for hiking & trekking

The most popular hiking routes are those in the Tatra Mountains but the Pieniny, the Bieszczady or the Karkonosze are also top spots.

Best spots for skiing & snowboarding

The Tatra Mountains are Poland ’s main skiing destination, the most popular resort being Zakopane. The densely wooded Bieszczady Mountains in the southeast are highly rated for cross-country skiing.
