Forests, mainly beech and spruce, cover 40 per cent of Slovakia , despite centuries of deforestation. Noted primarily for its mountainous nature, the Slovak landscape is home to the Carpathian Mountains that extend across most of the northern half of the country. Amongst them are the high peaks of the Tatra mountains, which are a popular skiing destination and home to many scenic lakes and valleys as well as the highest point in Slovakia, the Gerlachovsky at 2655 m. Lowlands are found in the south west of the country and in the south east.

Slovakia boasts a great network of marked trails in all mountain areas, and there are also numerous lakes and rivers amidst the glacial landscape, offering excellent canoeing, boating and swimming opportunities. There are popular winter sport centres in 30 mountain regions, the best of which are the Tatra Mountains , where over 40 ski tows and chairlifts are located. Other popular mountain areas include the Slovensky raj range, with its deep canyons, and the Mala Fatra range with its neighbouring Vratna dolina valley.
