South Africa can be divided into three major parts: the vast interior plateau, the Kalahari Basin , and a narrow coastal plain. Rocky hills and mountains rise from sparsely populated scrubland in the vast, dry interior plateau, while the Kalahari Basin is a great wilderness where the intrepid traveller can find isolation and marvel at Africa in the raw. The narrow coastal plain is bordered by extensive lagoons that run behind a barrier of sand dunes and superb white beaches, and has some of the largest areas of indigenous forest in the country.
ADVENTURE SPORTS IN SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa offers superb walking and hiking opportunities, particularly in nature parks that offer marked self-guided trails with sleeping huts on the way or guided remote trails. Water sports are a popular pastime, and South Africa has become renowned for shark-cage diving with great white sharks on the Cape . Sharks migrate through the Cape ’s False Bay from June to August and move into the Durban area ( KwaZulu-Natal ) from October to January. South Africa ’s diving infrastructure and facilities are well developed.

Best spots for water sports
Reef diving is popular in Sodwana Bay on the northern coast of KwaZulu-Natal , while wreck diving is widespread around the Cape . Diving certificates are required.
Best spots for hiking & trekking
The 54km De Hoop trail on the Western Cape is world-renowned as one of the best whale-watching spots, while the popular Hottentotsholland Roete is rugged and mountainous.
Best spots for bungee jumping
South Africa has one of the world’s highest drops – the bridge over the Blaukrans River, Western Cape. At 216m, this jump is more than twice as high as the jump of the bridge linking Zambia and Zimbabwe across the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls .
