Trinidad and Tobago are just barely off the coast of Venezuela , and Trinidad 's towering Northern Range is a continuation of the Andes . Scattering east to west, these mountains are home to the country’s highest peak, Cerro del Aripno at 941m. The rest of the island is made up of plains, rolling hills and mangrove swamps. Copious rivers snake across the island. Conversely, the island of Tobago has a central mountain range that reaches 620m at its highest point. Yawning lush valleys line a coastline dotted with coves and unspoiled beaches.

Divers will enjoy the serene, tranquil waters, while snorkelers will be at home among the coral reefs. Trinidad ’s North East Coast has some challenging breaks for surf enthusiasts, but if hiking is more your thing, you won’t be disappointed by the incredible rainforest trails on offer.

Best spots for water sports
The most popular site for diving is the coral reef at Buccoo Bay , as well as the concentration of dive sites around Little Tobago, Goat Island and St Giles Island. Store Bay and Pigeon Point are popular with swimmers and surfers, while there's also good snorkelling to be found at Pirate's Bay and Angel Reef.
Best spots for hiking & trekking
Trinidad boasts several worthwhile hikes, including a fine hiking trail to Blue Basin Waterfall in the Northern Range . An alternative is to hike in the Tobago Forest Reserve, which has a number of safer trailheads leading into the rainforest.
