White water rafting is popular through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River , while a top spot for canoeing is the Mississippi River . Oahu offers the best variety of scuba diving in Hawaii , while Hawaii is also the perfect spot for surfing, particularly in northern Oahu , Sunset Beach , Waimea and the Banzai Pipeline. California also has some good breaks in Malibu , Rincon and Steamer Lane . During winter, southern California is also superb, with swells at Huntingdon Beach and Santa Cruz .
